Night by Elie Wiesel is a deeply moving and powerful story of the personal experiences of Ellie Wiesel as a Hungarian Jew. In addition to the Nobel Peace Prize, he was awarded the French Legion of Honor Grand Croix, the Congressional Gold Medal of the United States, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He was also Yale University’s Humanities and Social Thought Henry Luce Visiting Scholar. Years later, he was also offered French citizenship when Francois Mitterand his close friend became President of France.īetween 19 he worked as a professor at the City University of New York where he taught Judaic Studies. He founded the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity and for his efforts he was granted the Nobel Peace Prize award.Īfter many years of being stateless, he was granted an American passport in 1956. He has become a speaker, writer, and spokesman on these issues and has spoken all over the world speaking in Kosovo, the former Soviet Union, Bosnia, and Rwanda. Many of the works including plays, collections of essays, and novels explore genocide and the Holocaust. He used the income from the sales of the book to support a Yeshiva he set up in Israel in memory of his father.Įlie Wiesel now dedicates his life to ensuring that the Holocaust will not be forgotten. What resulted was the internationally acclaimed memoir “Night,” which went on to become a bestseller, selling millions of copies and being translated into more than 30 languages. It was during this time that Francois Mauriac the French Catholic writer managed to persuade Wiesel to document his experiences. He would then start working as a teacher of Hebrew and translator to supplement his earnings as a journalist. After several years of studying at preparatory schools, he was sent to study at the Sorbonne in Paris. Nonetheless, he still decided to undertake religious studies. He believed that God had stood by and not been faithful to the Jews in their time of need. Given his experiences at Auschwitz during the Holocaust, his faith had been severely deprecated. In France, he had a choice of either taking religious or secular studies. His entire family was ultimately transferred to Poland and only Wiesel and two elder siblings would survive the ordeal.įollowing the end of World War II and liberation from Auschwitz in 1945, Elie Wiesel was part of a group of Jewish children orphaned that was sent to study in France. The family’s life changed drastically in the mid-1940s when Hitler ordered that all Jews in Eastern Europe be transferred to death camps in Poland. At home, he lived with a multilingual family that spoke Yiddish, Romanian, Hungarian and German. He wanted him to learn Hebrew so that he could study the works of modern Hebrew authors. While his father Shlomo was an emancipated Jew that was more open to happenings in the world, he also insisted that Wiesel study modern Hebrew. His maternal grandmother who was a Hasidic Jew had a deep impact on the young man and encouraged him to undertake Talmudic studies. They had settled there seeking refuge from the persecution and pogroms against Jews in Ukraine. The author was born in Sighet, Romania in 1928, a small Jewish community that had settled in the area since the mid-17th century. Frank Ginn (R-Danielsville) tried to legalize using the phone while the car is stopped in traffic. John Carson’s (R-Marietta) amendment to the state’s original law, there have been efforts to add to the rules or bolster the penalties. As Hydrick said, many mistakes factor into the danger we see on today’s streets. Maybe the lack of interest in obeying Georgia’s distracted-driving rules falls in line with the overall decrease in driver IQ and increase in selfish behavior. Drivers illegally park at higher financial risk. The first three offenses are one, two, and three points on a license and fines are, respectively, $50, $100, and $150. And the penalties for offenses were and are still extremely light. There were local and statewide grace periods after July 1st, 2018. The state tried to assuage fears about over-policing and tried to be sympathetic to people adjusting to the change. People seemed to take notice and either worked to get legal or schemed to break the law less obviously. Making radical changes to two things so personal to people - their phones and their vehicles - warranted the barrage. I spent a whole month writing about different angles of the law. In the months leading up to July 1st, 2018, there were numerous local news stories and ad campaigns to educate and warn Georgia drivers about the stricter law. The newer standard - hands-free in almost every instance - made the enforcement much more cut and dry. “So they had a difficult time proving it in court.” Any driver pulled over in Georgia for texting and driving from July 2010 to July 2018 could just tell the officer that they were dialing a number to call someone. “The previous law allowed people to talk on their phone while driving (and holding their phone)],” Hydrick said. Hydrick explained what other lawmakers, activists, and law enforcement have said to me before: The 2010 anti-texting law was extremely difficult to enforce. Hydrick did not name a particular factor for which to explain the decrease. Convictions did decrease to only about 50,000 last year. There were roughly 57,000 convictions in 2021, as Georgia road fatality numbers began to rise again. And that is despite the above-mentioned obstacles. The last two years (20) we’ve had over 50 thousand convictions (per year).” A stark increase. “Before the hands-free law was passed, we averaged about 10 to 11 thousand convictions per year for distracted driving. Did the citizen outcry about policing in the summer of 2020 change the enforcement strategy? Are staffing shortages and the recent rises in violent crime making this law have less priority? His response shocked me. I asked Hydrick how much the state and local agencies enforce the law and had the tactics in doing so changed. This has led me to believe that the newness of the Hands-Free Georgia Act has worn off and, likely, so has the effectiveness. My first assumption is that they are deprioritizing piloting a 3,000-pound, combustible metal wedge by choosing to message or scroll. My first judgment about drivers who are weaving and constantly tapping the brakes is no longer that they are under the influence, or unskilled, or tired, or timid. In 2023, this is even more obvious to me than five years ago. Idling at a traffic light phone-in-hand is bad enough, but so many motorists are still unabashedly thumbing and steering. In comparison to five years ago, many drivers seem to just blatantly hold their phones behind the wheel. The statistics show more success for the law than my anecdotal analysis does. If no one changed their behaviors after July 1st, 2018, then logic would state that more crashes would have distracted drivers, because the definition of such became broader. With the 2018 tightening of the original 2010 texting ban, several more actions on mobile devices became illegal for most drivers: holding a phone, watching and shooting videos, touching the mobile device for any reason besides dialing a call or adjusting GPS apps. So while driving has overall become more lethal since 2020, distracted driving has become less of a factor in those wrecks in Georgia. At the other end of the spectrum, a few antivirus tools still support ancient macOS versions for those who can’t (or won’t) upgrade. McAfee and Avira require 10.15 (Catalina), while F-Secure needs version 11 (Big Sur). Most Mac owners keep the OS up to date, so that shouldn’t be a problem. To install Avast One, you’ll need a Mac running macOS 10.13 (High Sierra). Avast One’s pricing is in line with comparable apps. With Norton, which costs $5 more, you also get five full VPN licenses, as well as 50GB of storage for your (Windows) backups. Your subscription gets you a broad range of protection including five no-limits VPN licenses. In addition, Avast One isn’t merely an antivirus. Note, though, that Clario and Intego charge the same for just three licenses. At first glance, Avast One’s price of $99.99 per year for five licenses might seem expensive. A $64.99 McAfee subscription lets you protect all the devices in your household. You pay $59.99 for Sophos, but that gets you 10 licenses. Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac, Trend Micro, and Webroot are examples. Quite a few Mac antivirus products, like their Windows cousins, cost just under $40 per year. If you notice that lab results for these two are almost identical, that’s why! How Much Does Avast One Cost? Avast and AVG do use the same antivirus engine and have done so since long before the merger. Gen also owns AVG and Avira, but so far, all the brands continue to exist independently. In late 2022, Avast completed a merger with Norton, forming a new company called Gen Digital. It’s more feature-rich than Avast Premium Security for Mac, which isn’t getting an update at this time. The Avast One product line is clearly the wave of the future. All of Avast’s existing apps remain available for download or purchase. However, the latest version, reviewed here, is strictly in the US to start with. The Avast One product line was released initially in the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. However, you should also consider our Editors’ Choice Mac antivirus apps Norton 360 Deluxe for Mac and Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac. Depending on your needs, Avast One can be a worthwhile upgrade from the free Avast One Essential for Mac. It doesn’t stop there, adding integrated VPN protection, defense against browser fingerprinting, data breach monitoring, and more. Antivirus protection for your Mac is a must, and Avast One for Mac gives you that protection. If you forgo antivirus protection on your Mac because you believe it’s not needed, you’re playing right into the hands of malware coders. How many Macs would a hacker hack if a hacker could hack Macs? That’s easy-all of them! It’s true that macOS is intrinsically more secure than Windows, but it’s not impenetrable. The textured dashboard and design look futuristic and sleek. All the fabrics, buttons and plastic panels are of good quality. Like the performance and the exterior design, the inside, too, reminds me of a more substantial vehicle. It doesn’t look unique from the side and could be confused with any number of other hatchbacks on the market, but the rear hatch itself has a very small window and lots of sheet metal below it that’s framed by two very tall taillights. The four-door hatchback is a bit better-looking and seems like a more cohesive, upscale design. Its short trunk lid and wraparound taillights highlight how much shorter the car is versus the Elantra. The front end mimics the larger compact Hyundai Elantra’s look, but the smaller dimensions of the Accent are most noticeable in profile and the rear of the sedan. However, tides are changing, and the Accent is the second of a new wave of aggressively styled yet affordable small cars along with the Fiesta and upcoming Kia Rio. Buyers in this segment have been basically told that with the bottom-basement sticker price comes ho-hum looks, and who are you to complain? Look at cars like the Yaris, Fit and Nissan Versa, and you won’t be wowed. When you think subcompact, interesting design doesn’t immediately come to mind. The car didn’t exhibit much of the body roll you sometimes encounter in this segment.Īdd that to terrific brakes - standard four-wheel discs - and the Accent exudes a sense of safe travel, which is something that is often hard to come by in a subcompact. I did feel that the low-rolling-resistance tires didn’t offer enough grip when making sharp turns, however. Steering is as crisp as you would expect from a car this small. My test route on the roads around Las Vegas and the Hoover Dam was made up of mostly fresh or smooth blacktop, but even over the rare concrete highway segments I encountered, it was easy to hold a conversation. Only the Fit might be quicker, but the Fit falls far short in a very important department that makes the Accent exceptional: It has a soft, comfortable ride that is rare not only among subcompacts but also most compacts. While stopped on an incline, it keeps the car from rolling backward when the driver’s foot moves from the brake to the gas. Few cars in this class have that feature or hill start assist, which is standard on automatic models. It felt livelier than the Fiesta, especially when using the manual feature on the six-speed automatic I was testing. It struggled even more up hills, but on the highway it passed with plenty of assurance. When accelerating from a dead stop, the Accent strained, as do most in this class, and I was ferrying two other average-size adults in the car. While the Accent has more power than others in the class, I wouldn’t call it fleet of foot. The Honda Fit is far behind at 27/33 mpg, and the Toyota Yaris is in the mix at 29/36 mpg. The Accent’s highest configuration price is $16,795. You can choose a Fiesta SE hatchback with an automatic and optional SFE Package to get 29/40 mpg, but that will cost $16,990. The Fiesta is closest, with ratings of 28/37 mpg. It gets 28/37 mpg city/highway when teamed with either the standard six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Hyundai has direct injection in its new 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, good for 138 horsepower. Like the Ford Fiesta, the new Accent gets an advanced engine. Inexpensive engines and transmissions have resulted in subpar mileage numbers despite the fact that the subcompacts weigh less than compact cars. Subcompact buyers have been treated poorly in the performance department. The Accent sedan is on sale now, and the hatchback will arrive at dealers by the end of June. The base price has risen by a few thousand dollars, but it actually delivers more value now. The bulbous two-door hatchback body style - and its sub-$10,000 price tag - are gone, replaced by attractive four-door sedan and hatchback body styles. The Accent now runs away from the rest of the segment in terms of value and features. Hyundai’s Accent was at the rear of the pack, and for 2012 the company has completely redesigned its entry-level offering. While all of them got you to Point B, few did so as a complete package, and the segment as a whole didn’t set the world afire, even with high gas prices. There was a slew of small cars with low sticker prices and decent efficiency, power and features. Editor’s note: Estimated mileage ratings have been lowered to reflect a November 2012 EPA audit of this car’s stated mileage.Ī few years ago the subcompact class was supposed to take over the auto industry.
